The Military Connection or Civilian-Military Common Interests in Higher Education.

The focus of this paper is on the civilian-military interrelationships in the area of post-secondary education. These interests or involvements can be further divided into several major areas. The first two being from an institutional perspective and the third being that of the individual's interest. The two institutional interests can be described as: (1) the two-way relationship between the military (including the Dod, the Services, and their colleges) and (2) the civilian colleges and universities. The military is both a consumer of civilian higher education and a producer through its service academics and staff and war colleges. The civilian educator has much in common with the military but only those directly involved appreciate this fact. There should be more interaction between the two sectors because higher education and the all volunteer force compete for the same resource -- the eighteen year old.
