The present studies were predicated on research results employing the rhesus monkey as a model for responses to low-frequency harmonic (sinusoidal) acceleration. Data from these previous efforts showed that measures of the phase relationships between the input stimulus and the resulting eye movement output were highly repeatable and not influenced by changes in arousal level. It was also found that the sudden loss of a labyrinth (in this case by surgical destruction) could be detected by low-frequency harmonic acceleration and that the animals could not compensate for this loss, especially at the lower frequencies of stimulation.
