Effects of CO2Laser Radiation on Oral Soft Tissues:An Initial Report.

Three different oral mucosal sites were exposed to the CO2surgical laser. Although nearly every laser exposure caused the loss of the epithelium and penetration of the lamina propria up to 0.5mm.,no bleeding occurred. HISTOLOGIC CHANGES INCLUDED SHREDDING OF KERATIN, VACUOLE FORMATION AND BASAL CELL DEGENERATION IN THE EPITHELIUM. Glassy homogenization of collagen and vascular occlusion characterize the alterations in the connective tissue. These changes were consistent for each of the three tissues examined. Within the limits of the experimental procedure,it appears that the laser vaporizes an additional 0.1mm.
