Acceleration Effects on the Ability to Activate Emergency Devices in F-4Aircraft.

Experiments have been performed and are described in this report which measure the influence of environment on the time it takes to reach an emergency control activation device and which measure the change of physical position at the time of activation due to the environmental forces. Data are reported for both loose and tight torso harness straps. Minus Gx and minus Gz are identified as the components of various likely emergency environments which cause pilots the greatest difficulties. The contribution of combined individual anthropometric measures has been identified as having very pronounced influence on the reachability of certain control devices under specific environments. Improvements in existing seat harness systems and testing for future systems to be developed are recommended. (Author)
