Investigation of Card Programmable and Chip Programmable Pocket Calculators and Calculator Systems for Use at Naval Postgraduate School and in the Naval Establishment.

摘要

This thesis investigates the usefulness of card programmable pocket calculators in the Management curricula of the Naval Postgraduate School and in the fleet,based upon manufacturer-provided information on the HP-67,HP-97,SR-52,TI-59,and NS-7100calculators;NPS classroom experimentation;hands on programming of the HP-67and SR-52;interviews;and the literature. All aspects of calculator functions,programming and programmability are surveyed with particular emphasis on educational and practical applications. Thus,this is a baseline document for study by potential purchasers and users. This study concludes that these machines provide significant advantages in teaching or learning mathematical concepts and that the pocket calculator is a potentially important management and tactical support tool navy-wide. In addition,thinking process transmutation,discovered during this study,is concluded to be an inevitable and important by-product of calculator programming which significantly improves the user's overall analytic capacity.
