Tissue Banking: The United States Navy Tissue Bank.

The experience of the US Navy Tissue Bank supports the concept that preserved allografts are clinically useful. Among the methods for long-term preservation and storage, deep-freezing and freeze-drying seem to offer the most acceptable alternatives. The Navy Tissue Bank has been involved in the field of tissue preservation of 25 years and represents one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world. As the need for preserved tissue allografts continues to increase, it is anticipated that a number of regional tissue banks will be required to meet the needs of the medical community. The experience in methodology and technology gained at this Tissue Bank is offered to assist others interested in the acquisition, preservation, and storage of human allografts. (Author)
