It has been known for some time that lymphoid cells from two unrelated individuals mixed together in vitro undergo blastogenesis. This reaction of one lymphoid cell towards the other has been termed the mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) and is thought to measure the incompatibility between the responding and irradiated or mitomycin-C-treated stimulating cell. The nature of the determinants on the stimulator cells that induce such a response have been termed lymphocyte-defined (LD) antigens. (Author)
