A Standardized Gasoline Simulant for Use in Laboratory Investigation of Flame Fuels.

This report presents the results of a study to develop a gasoline simulant for laboratory evaluation of flame fuels. Variations in the chemical make-up of gasoline due to brand,regional,and seasonal formulations indicate the need for a gasoline substitute in the laboratory. A number of pure solvents were selected to approximate the constituents in gasoline;testing was conducted on several mixtures alone and in different flame fuel formulations. By varying the composition of the mixture,the chemical,physical,and rheological properties of the simulant were formulated with properties that closely approximate those of gasoline. The final composition (by weight) of the simulant is n-pentane, 40%; hexanes, 20%; isooctane, 5%;toluene, 10%;xylene 20% and paraffin oil, 5%. This laboratory substitute for gasoline will serve as a standard for comparing potential flame fuels and correlation of data from different laboratories. (Author)
