摘要

This report covers investigative research conducted into high density recording technologies applicable to the Navy Technical Information Presentation Program (NTIPP). Poe Engineering Services collected and analyzed optical and mechanical video disc data from a wide variety of sources in the United States,Europe,and Japan. Data was collected by means of personal interviews, telephonic discussions,and direct correspondence,in addition to the analysis of relevant patent papers,material appearing in various technical publications,and data presented at scientific and technical symposia. No video disc systems are presently being marketed anywhere in the world,but at least two (incompatible) systems could be on the U.S. market and all as early as December 1977. All video disc systems are still developmental,and all have varying degrees of technological problems remaining to be resolved. A great many companies worldwide are concentrating efforts on developing video disc systems of their own. This effort breaks down as follows: 75% optical systems; 25% mechanical and other systems. For the purposes of NTIPP,the optical photographic system appears to offer the most advantages in the three critical areas of:player, mastering,and replication. Virtually any video disc system selected for inclusion in NTIPP will require additional developmental funding. (Author)
