The molecular characterization of Kel-F 800 by High Speed Gel Permeation Chromatography (HSGPC) employing ultra-violet (UV) and refractive index (RI) detectors has been investigated. The UV detector, operating at 254 nm, produced chromatograms which exhibited large peaks associated with the low molecular weight impurities in the resin. The RI detector was relatively insensitive to these impurities and was usable when very large sample quantities were employed. Under these conditions of sample "loading," the molecular weight parameters obtained as polystyrene equivalents were only meaningful relative to one another. Further improvements are planned.
