The layered transition metal dichalcogenides have recently been the subject of considerable interest. This is due in part to the intriguing intercalation properties of these materials, where alkali metals or organic molecules may be inserted between the layers; but in addition, the elucidation of the band structure of these quasi-two-dimensional materials presents interesting problems. In particular, the lT phase of TiS2 and TaS2 is not understood. This phase has octahedral coordination of the metal by the chalcogen atoms, giving a single-layer repeat unit. This is in contrast to the phases with trigonal or mixed coordination, where multilayer repear units occur. In this paper the studies of this solid solution are extended through measurements of heat capacity and optical absorption at liquid helium temperatures. The results of these two measurements are presented separately in the next two sections, and the results are discussed in the final section.
