The goal of this problem definition study was to assess the Army's responsibility for conducting further investigation into the toxicological and environmental properties of eight chemicals associated with smoke and pyrotechnic production. The first six of these chemicals are dyes which are used in smoke formulations to impart color to the smoke. Hexachlorethane is used in smoke mixes as a chlorine donor to make the smoke white. The smoke mixes are formulated from purchased materials and loaded into grenades or canisters at Pine Bluff Arsenal. Red phosphorus is used as fuel in incendiary and smoke mixes.
