The Youngdahl cylindrical stress functions were used to derive the analytical expressions for the quasi-static thermal stress fields in a isotropic, homogeneous, finite solid cylinder whose lateral surface was heated by a nuclear thermal environment. Because the derived axial stress equation did not satisfy the boundary conditions on the ends of the cylinder, the use of these functions in solving the Navier displacement equation did not result in an exact solution for the thermal stresses. These functions did, however, provide a plane strain solution for regions away from the ends of the cylinder. (Author)
