Acoustic Model Evaluation Procedures: A Review. Distance Measures and Statistical Test Procedures for Assessing the Accuracy of Propagation Loss Models

This work reviews methods for evaluating computer models of underwater acoustic phenomena. More specifically it focuses on various approaches to the problem of quantitatively assessing the accuracy of propagation loss models. Model evaluation procedures recently formulated by two groups, the Panel on Sonar Systems Models (POSSM) and the Acoustic Environmental Support Detachment (AESD), are briefly reviewed. Various distance measures and statistical test procedures are explored as candidates for assessing the closeness of predictions and measurements.
