The purpose of the MX Weapon System Safety Program is to identify significant accident risk and define methods to cope effectively with that accident risk within program cost, schedule, performance, and risk acceptability parameters. The program encompasses the design, development, fabrication, checkout, modification, test, servicing, maintenance, transportation, handling, training, deployment, and normal/contingency operations of all elements. Elements of the MX Weapon System include operational and test flight vehicles; the ground support equipment required to handle, transport, service, maintain, checkout and test all elements of the MX Weapon System; the ground and flight software required to checkout and control all elements of the MX Weapon System; and the operational and test facilities. This standard, in conjunction with MIL-STD-1574A, defines the MX integrated system safety program and includes both the management and technical functions to be performed by all contractors providing MX equipment or services to the ICBM Program Office. SAMSO-STD-79-1 is a tailored application of MIL-STD-1574A and provides for a standardized implementation of the system safety program requirements for the MX Weapon System.
