摘要

The means residual life (mrl) function epsilon sub F(x) gives the expected remaining life of a patient at age x, where the underlying failure distribution is F. Reliabilists and biometricians have found it useful to categorize failure distributions by monotonicity properties of the mrl. In particular F is said to be a decreasing mean residual life (dmrl) distribution if epsilon sub F(0) is finite and for all 0 less than or = t, epsilon sub F(s) less than or = epsilon sub F(t). If the preceding inequality is reversed, F is said to be an increasing mean residual life (imrl) distribution.
