Studies on Corrosion Prevention of Mardan Connectors by Organic Coatings

Electrical disturbances caused by the formation of corrosion products on computer contacts is a serious problem, especially in older contacts containing a tarnish-prone silver layer under gold plating. The efficacy of a number of corrosion preventative organic fluids in preventing corrosion in sulfide-bearing atmospheres has been evaluated, in conjunction with a chromating process for the same purpose. Studies were made both with connectors and with silver. A statistical treatment applied to visual evaluation clearly identified two organic formulations as effective corrosion inhibitors, verifying other observations. These fluids were as effective as chromating alone, but an additional measure of protection was afforded by the combination of chromate/organic fluid. (Author)
