Inorganic Reactants for Synthesis of Novel Fluorocarbon Derivatives

Several different fluorocarbon fluids containing the SF5O- and CF3O- groups have been prepared using fluoroolefins and either SF5OOSO2F or CF3OOSO2F. In addition the fluorocarbon ethers, SF5OC2F4OSO2F and CF3OC2F4OSO2F, and several of their derivatives were prepared and characterized. Chlorine fluorosulfate and bromine fluorosulfate were shown to have wide utility in the displacement of halide from fluorocarbon halides (R sub f X) resulting in the formation of fluorocarbon fluorosulfates. The R sub f SO3F compounds are readily converted to derivatives such as acid fluorides, acids, etc., and in this way functionality is introduced into relatively inert fluorocarbons. A new method was discovered for the introduction of fluorine into an aromatic ring with retention of aromaticity, using NF4BF4 in HF solution. Also when the arene is already highly fluorinated, it was shown that a slower addition of fluorine occurred to give cyclohexadienes and cyclohexenes.
