The phase coherence properties of pulsed carbon dioxide lasers are analyzed. Experimental results for a self-pulsing helium neon ring laser are presented and used to calculate the average phase coherence time for that system. Experimental factors are the primary limitations for phase coherence. These factors influence the phase by altering the resonant cavity by mirror motion or by index of refraction changes. The importance of these two factors are assessed for high power TEA lasers using the experimental results of others. A novel technique of active phase correction for correcting the phase of pulsed lasers is presented. (Author)
