摘要

This report describes the results of a study that was conducted to determine the performance characteristics of several pulse code modulation codes for serial high density digital recording using wideband analog recorder/reproducers. The major conclusions are: (1) The standard Inter-Range Instrumentation Group (IRIG) conditions for analog recording with bias are also nearly optimum for serial high density digital recording (HDDR) with bias when a wideband IRIG recorder/reproducer is used; (2) The 'best' codes for serial HDDR when wideband IRIG analog recorder/reproducers are used are BIPhi-L and RNRZ-L. The maximum 'reliable' bit packing density for BIPhi-L is 15 kb/in. The maximum 'reliable' bit packing density for RNRZ-L is 25 kb/in. The minimum 'reliable' reproduce bit rate for RNRZ-L is 200 kb/s. Fifteen appears to be a good choice of shift register length for the RNRZ-L randomizer; and (3) Bit error rates of 0.000001 or better are easily achieved when good quality wideband instrumentation tape, 50-mil track widths, and the maximum recommended bit packing densities are used. The 1980 edition of the Telemetry Standards (Range Commanders Council IRIG Document 106-80) included Serial HDDR Standards based on these conditions. (Author)
