An Investigation of the High Rate Volumetric Properties of Snow

Reported here are the results of a three year study of the high rate volumetric properties of Snow. In addition to the report presented here, the project resulted with over ten publications which are included in the list of references. The constitutive behavior of dry snow is analyzed and described mathematically by means of two microdynamical models. These are then evaluated by means of previous experimental data. A number of applications are then investigated. These applications include vehicle mobility in shallow and deep snowpack, steady shockwaves, and nonsteady shockwaves. Finally, an electromagnetic stress wave generator was designed, constructed and used in a shockwave testing program on snow. Experimental results are presented and discussed. (Author)
