Basic Erosion Investigation in Small Turbomachinery

Description of the high temperature erosion facility at the University of Cincinnati is presented. A large portion of this investigation is devoted to the measurement and prediction of particle rebound characteristics. The abrasive particles were silica sand with average diameters of 165 microns impacting on the following materials: INCO 718, Ti 6-4, 2024 AL, RENE 150, Lead and Berillium. In addition, measurements of erosion rates were performed for materials used in jet engine blades. Semi-empirical equations were developed to predict erosion rates for INCO 718, Ti 6-4 and 2024 AL target materials. (Author)
