The Effects of Time-Varying Noise on Speech Intelligibility Indoors

This report summarizes the effects upon speech intelligibility of both steady-state time-varying noise, particularly time-varying aircraft and traffic noises. Though no present measure adequately predicts this effect, the articulation index (AI) is recommended as the best available. In the classroom an AI of 0.4 is considered a minimum requirement for instruction and ideally, an AI of 0.7 or greater is recommended, especially under time-varying noise conditions. (Author)
