Laser-Raman scattering has been used to measure temperature and nitrogen number density in the combustion cylinder of a specialized research CI engine. Measurements were made as a function of crank angle degrees (CAD) for unfueled operation at 500 and 1,000 rpm and for operation at 1,000 rpm using n-heptane as an alternate fuel to diesel fuel no. 2. A pulsed ruby laser system was the excitation source for the Raman scattering, and the CAD resolution of the measurements was .0015 to 0.36 degrees. (Author)
