A two-year study of alternatives to the current safe powering standard was performed, This study incorporates a literature search and review of mathematical models for small boat maneuvering, a literature search for data on the effects of acceleration on unrestrained passengers, review and refinement of a large accident data base, testing of boat/engine combinations, and analysis of the results of all these activities, The conclusion of the study is that an alternative formula using maximum speed, a turn severity measure derived from slenderness ratio and hull shape, and the relationship of these two factors to one another is an accurate predictor of the severity of lateral accelerations given a particular boat/engine combination, Further analysis and testing s recommended to validate the formula against a larger data set and to refine it to possibly include a predictor of cyclic instability.
