Design and Manufacture of Rigid Combustible Propelling Charge Containers.

The work covered by this report consisted of the design and manufacture of different length, combustible, rigid propellant containers as potential replacements for the bag charge presently in use. Matched metal molding and spiral wrapping processes were utilized with five different product formulations. No significant problems were encountered during manufacture. Both processes were successfully in producing a chemically and dimensionally acceptable product. Marbon resin was successfully incorporated into the formula as a substitute for Durolok. A process was developed to thicken the base of the rigid container or retention area by matched metal molding to improve seating the charge in the breech. The feasibility of producing modular containers of different lengths to allow assembly of different length charges was demonstrated.
