Song of Sea Ice and Other Arctic Ocean Melodies

These observations of sea ice, and other physical features of the Arctic Ocean, are a result of three field programs in the Arctic since 1978. I offer my observations on Arctic acoustics more as a systematic collector, perhaps as a speculative interpreter, and possibly also as an evoker of new insights. Such insights, I believe, are relevant to basic engineering questions on the Arctic with potential application to a wide range of problems. For example, noise radiated into the ocean by sea ice relates to its mechanical strength; and its strength, in turn, is of concern in determining loads on petroleum platforms, icebreaker bows, and the like.
