Analysis of Artifacts from a Test Excavation at the Site of Fort Sully I, (39HU52), Hughes County, South Dakota.

The military frontier outpost called Fort Sully secured a portion of the Missouri River from 1863 to 1866 and lay just east of present-day Pierre, South Dakota. A small portion of the site was tested archaeologically in 1970. Herein is a brief history of the site, a report of the excavation and an analysis of the artifacts recovered.
