Increases in the launch velocity of kinetic energy penetrators seem likely to result from new launcher concepts, as well as from improvements to existing launcher designs. To what extent investment in development of this area of technology can be expected to pay off depends on balancing the system burdens against the expected increases in lethality accompanying increases in striking velocity. Basic to a long rod penetrator's lethality is its capability for deep penetration and velocity for a tungsten alloy long rod penetrator striking at and above ordnance velocities is discussed in this paper. There has been adequate presentation and discussion in the literature of the eroding rod model for penetration at high velocities, where the conditions approximate the underlying assumptions of hydrodynamic theory.
