Recent data, however, suggests that the actual turnaround time (TAT) for the J-52 engine is almost four times the standard specified by the directive. One approach to investigating this excessive time in the pipeline is to examine the operation of the repair system, focussing attention on the utilization of resources. The objective of this project was, therefore, to develop a computer simulation model which replicates the J-52 intermediate level repair cycle, concentrating on repair crews, workstands, and test cells as the major resources employed. A hypothetical scenario based on contrived parameters was developed in order to convert the model to code and demonstrate its application on the computer. The results of a sample simulation show that excessive rapair backlogs and delays as well as inefficient resource utilization can, in fact, be identified in the output, thereby paving the way for management to experiment with different resource utilization schemes in order to achieve a lower TAT.
