The purpose of the program was to evaluate bis(methylsulfonoxymethyl) ether (BMME) as a reagent for the preparation of H-type oximes such as toxogonin dichloride and HI-6. Small, medium and large bench-scale (limited) studies were carried out. Purified BMME was evaluated as a mutagen in the Ames Test (negative) and the Chromosome Aberration Assay (positive). An alternative to bis(chloromethyl) ether, a carcinogen, was sought.
