Approaches to Subunit Vaccines against the Typhus Rickettsiae, Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsia prowazekii

We attempted to identify and purify those antigen components from Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsia prowazekii that are protective in forms which are both highly immunogenic and nontoxic. Subunit vaccines have obvious appeal in terms of purity and standardization and particularly as forerunners to future vaccines produced by recombinant DNA methods or synthesized as small critical peptides.
