Natural Antibodies against Phospholipids and Liposomes in Humans

In the course of using normal human serum as a complement source, it was found that many human sera contain anti-phospholipid antibodies. These antibodies were detected by measuring complement-dependent immune damage to liposomes. The highest-reacting normal human serum studies reacted strongly with liposomes containing egg phosphatidyl choline (PC), cholesterol and dicetyl phosphate. No activity was observed with liposomes containing dipalmitoyl PC on sphirgomyclin as phospholipid. Other sera contained antibodies against sphingomyclin or phospatidylserine, but there was no apparent cross-reactivity between these phospholipids. These antibodies against normal membrane phospholipids may represent a novel group of autoantibodies that have important physiological and biological functions.
