Time-Temperature Dependence of the Strength of Commercial Zirconia Ceramics

The usual combination of attractive properties exhibited by transformation toughened zirconias (TTZ's) has focused attention on them as leading candidates for application in the adiabatic Diesel engine. These materials are age-hardened ceramic alloy systems and as such they are likely to be susceptible to overaging and loss of strength at long times at high temperatures. This paper presents preliminary data on the microstructural, phase and dimensional stability of aged TTZ's together with some data on the effects of aging on strength, toughness and modulus. Stress rupture data on TTZ's with both Mg0 and Y203 additions show a considerable decrease in load carrying ability at temperatures of 800 C and above. (Author)
