X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to determine the locus of failure in iron/epoxy lap joints that had been immersed in water at 60 deg C for long times and then tested to determine their retained strength. The fracture surfaces of joints prepared from adherends pretreated with aqueous solutions of gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (gamma-APS) at pH 8.0 contained significant amounts of silicon but very little iron, indicating that failure was probably near the adhesive/silane interface.
