Hangfires, Causes, Hazards, and Remedies (Case Study of XM242 25-MM Chain Gun Incident)

This report discusses the causes of a hangfire, the hazards created by hangfires, and the design considerations in externally powered weapons for minimizing the occurrence of hangfires and eliminating their hazardous effects. An actual case study is used as an example to illustrate these discussions; namely, the hangfire incident involving the XM242 Hughes 25-mm Chain Gun which has since been type classified as the M242.
