Structure/Property Studies of a Heterocyclic Conductive Polymer.

Oxidized conductive polypyrrole/anion materials have been electrochemically synthesized under various preparation conditions to study the influence of electrode potential, current density, and anion species on the composition, structure, and properties. Elemental analysis indicates an increase in the sulfur/nitrogen ratio as the electrode potential is increased for polypyrrole/tosylate (PP(+)/OTs(-)). This implies an increase in anion concentration (or extent of oxidation of polypyrrole chains) with potential. Tensile properties of PP(+)/OTs(-) films have been measured and indicate a strong dependence on synthesis potential and current density. The ultimate tensile strength was found to decrease with an increase in these parameters. The effect of the size of the dopant anion has also been addressed by incorporating various para-substituted benzene sulfonates as the electrolyte counterion in the reaction. Tensile strength, modulus, and strain behavior was examined and has shown a transition in the tensile storage modulus (E') at approximately 25 C. This transition was not dependent on anion species.
