Moist Convection in a Mountain Boundary-Layer Model

The existence of a convergence region to the lee of a mountain barrier has been successfully simulated in previous studies using a 2-D version of the Colorado State University Cloud and Mesoscale Model described by Tripoli and Cotton (1982). Observations have shown that the convergence zone leads to the formation of cumuli and cumulonimbi in the mountains. In the present study - using the AFGL version of the model - we add water vapor and warm-rain physics to the dry model used in the previous boundary-layer studies. Results indicate that in addition to the focused convergence resulting from the convergence zone, a mean domain-scale convergence is needed to produce significant moist convection in the simulation.
