The factors which control effects of self assembling colloids upon desphosphorylation and the spontaneous hydrolysis of Mustard simulants have been examined. The colloids are aqueous micelles, alcohol-swollen micelles or microemulsions and aggregates of hydrophobic ammonium ions. The nucleophiles studied include hydroxide ion, alkoxide and aryloxide ions, peroxyanions, oximate and amidoximate ions, and hydroxamate and imidazolide ions. p-Nitrophenyl diphenyl phosphate was generally the substrate, although spontaneous hydrolysis of 2, 4-dinitrophenyl phosphate dianion was also examined. The nonfunctional surfactants were generally C16H33N+Me3X- where X = Br, Cl, MeSO3 or OH. The effects of functional groups, hydroxyethyl, oximate, and hydroxamate were also examined. For all the bimolecular reactions studied rate enhancements by the colloidal species were due largely to increased reactant concentrations in the small colloidal particles. For spontaneous hydrolyses of 2, 4-dinitrophenyl phosphate and the Mustard simulant the medium effect of the colloidal particle was all important.
