摘要

A polyatomic molecule typically has multiple pathways for reaction available to it after accommodation on a solid surface. Competition between the available pathways is controlled by rate constants of the elementary surface processes which lead to each pathway, and by surface concentration effects. Both of these controlling factors are dependent on the surface temperature. Observation of distinct temperature regions in which the available pathways are active or inactive is achieved using a new method, scanning kinetic spectroscopy (SKS). A single SKS experiment allows the temperature dependence of the rates of important elementary surface processes to be simultaneously observed.
