Expression of Campylobacter Genes for Proline Biosynthesis in Escherichia coli

Cloned DNA from Campylobacter jejuni was found to complement auxotrophic defects in proline metabolism in several strains of Escherichia coli. A 4.4-kilobase fragment of Campylobacter DNA encodes the genes analogous to the proA and B genes of E. coli and Salmonella typhimurium. Campylobacter jejuni is an important cause of gastroenteritis throughout the world.
