Variational Principles for dynamics of the fluid-saturated porous media are derived assuming that soil is linear elastic and deformation is small. Starting with basic mathematical concepts related to the inverse problem of calculus of variation and following the methodology proposed by Sandhu for coupled problems, general variatonal principles for the problem are developed. Complementary as well as direct formulation are discussed with reference to finite element approximation space and the excitation are allowed for. Extensions of the variational principles to relax smoothness requirements on certain field variables are introduced along with some specializations.
