In this report, experimental work on a model based on information processing in the retina for global processing of the information gathered by individual detectors in a focal plane array is described. The model give edge or discontinuity detection for pattern recognition under minimal contrast conditions. As the resolution achieved by the retina under some conditions is much better than the first order Rayleigh criterion, the model should have similar high performance. Measurements of small movements of the image in the focal plane, such as due to vibration, were made a part of the performance. The data indicates that more rapid movements enhanced the responses at the center-surround junction, while the sensitivity in the center remained depressed. A key part of the system is the preservation of analogue data until discontinuity and gray (color) scale information have been separate encoded. Future tests on model systems to determine other optimum circuit configurations are described.
