Analysis of the Superintendent Position in Air Force Civil Engineering

This research provided a preliminary analysis of the Superintendent position in Air Force Civil Engineering. A survey was developed using specific tasks based on the work of Henry Mintzberg. Respondents were asked to provide the time spent on each task as well as the relative importance of each task. The data was then analyzed to determine how much time Superintendents spent on each of Mintzberg's ten roles and which roles were found to be most important by the Superintendents. The analysis indicated that Superintendents spent the most time performing a leadership role. They also found this role to be the most important to the overall success of their jobs. The analysis also indicated that the figurehead or ceremonial role was the least important and the least time consuming. There was also virtually no difference in the time spent on each of the roles between CONUS and overseas based Superintendents. Recommendations for implementation of this research and for further researach were also presented.
