This manuscript documents an investigation of the feedback control of a variable air volume heating and air-conditioning system for a moderately sized multiroom building. The primary objective was to determine if commonly applied single-loop control system desing principles are adequate for designing air-conditioning control systems. The research established that the sensitivity of the single-input single-output conventional design to the presence of the multi-input multi-output interconnection was insignificant. Also, the Ziegler-Nichols control parameter tuning technique produced highly oscillatory control systems when applied to an air-conditioning system. Modified tuning formulas are presented.
