Meteorological and Climatological Conditions Affecting the Vertical Structure of Visibility in Northern Germany

The objective of the program was to establish a climatology of the visibility profile within the height range of 2 - 300m for Northern Germany. To achieve this objective continuous measurements of the visual range, temperature and dewpoint temperature at six different height levels on a 300m-radiomast as well as the registration of the cloud ceiling up to 1500m were performed for about two and a half years. For selected weather situations additional high resolution vertical soundings by means of a tethersonde in accordance with sodar measurements supplied more detailed data. It turned out that the visibility profile is strongly correlated to the weather situation (low, high etc.) depending on the time of the day and on the season.
