Identification of Metal Ion Chloro Complexes in an Ambient Temperature Molten Salt

The chloro complexation of LiCl, AgCl, CdCl2, and ZnCl2 in a chloride ion rich ambient temperature chloroaluminate ionic liquid had been studied by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Chloride ion reacts with added metal chloride salts according to the reversible reaction xCl(-) + MCl subscript m yields MCl subscript M + x superscript x-, where x is a small, positive integer. The proton chemical shift of the organic component of the molten salt is very sensitive to the free chloride concentration of the melt. Therefore, observing the change in the chemicals shifts of the organic cation with increasing amounts of added metal chloride salt allows the determination of the value of x. Results indicate the formation of LiCl2(-), AgCl2-, CdCl42(-), and ZnCl4(2-) at 30 C. In addition, and extended model for ion interactions in these melts is dscribed.
