摘要

A Titanium-indiffused guide-wave interferometric modulator has been demonstrated at lambda = 3.39 micrometer with a linear small-signal 3-dB bandwidth of 1.8 GHz. This is the first interferometric modulator operating at lambda greater than 1.6 micrometers. An extinction ratio of 18.9 dB was obtained with V sub pi = 31 V or TE-polarized radiation. This value of V sub pi is consistent with predictions based upon lambda = 0.85 micrometer modulator data and simple lambda square scaling rules, indicating little dispersion in the electro-optical coefficients of LiNbO3, over the 0.85-3.39-micrometer region. Such modulators are important components for the long-distance repeaterless data links which is the goal of the large effort in the development of ultra-low-loss fibers at the longer wavelengths.
