Triorganotin compounds exhibit toxicity dependent upon the organotin side chain's structure. Both acute and sublethal effects on development rate and growth showed good correlations with the Hansch Pi parameter, an estimated index of hydrophobic behavior. Organotin toxicity can be classified into two categories based upon toxicant concentration. At low concentrations, compensation, and in some function of the physicochemical properties of chemical stressors, compensation is a general, non-specific response, independent of the nature or mode of action of the specific chemicals under consideration. Changes in development and growth rates appear to form a typical crustacean General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) with many parallels to responses noted in mammals exhibiting non-specific stress.
