Heavy Snowfall Situations in Central Europe

Some typical heavy snowfall situations for Central Europe are presented. The ability to forecast for snowfall situations in Europe will be significantly enhanced once one learns to recognize those synoptic patterns associated with significant weather producing storms. One thing that is prevalent in all of the cases discussed in this report is that the difference between success and failure in correctly forecasting these occurrences was an in-depth analysis of upper air features. Another key ingredient is the affect the local topography has on the systems as they move through an area. In fact, it the forecasters take into account the effects on the system as it progresses towards him, he sometimes can correctly forecast the dissipation or development of the storm. More significantly, a close metwatch allows him to react to subtle or significant changes as they occur rather than well after the fact when it is too late.
